Strong reviews, an A CinemaScore and exceptional IMAX demand point toward healthy weekday business and a second weekend that should remain large even with normal blockbuster declines. The lack of direct competition before Spider-Man arrives on July 31 also gives The Odyssey valuable premium-screen time.
The target still requires roughly another $236 million in less than two weeks. International reporting can lag, exchange rates can shift the published total and a steep second-weekend decline would make the deadline tight. I expect the film’s event status and repeat-viewing appeal to carry it over the line shortly before the month ends.
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey did not open like a difficult literary adaptation. It opened like a global franchise film. The first weekend produced approximately $264.1 million worldwide, including about $124.5 million domestically, and IMAX accounted for an unusually large share of the total. Those numbers immediately changed the conversation from “Will the audience show up?” to “How high can the run go?”
Reaching $500 million by July 31 requires the movie to add roughly $236 million after its debut. That is a demanding pace, but the calendar helps. The film has more than a full week of weekday play before its second weekend and another set of weekdays before Spider-Man: Brand New Day opens. Premium-format demand appears especially strong, and sold-out large-format screenings can soften the normal decline because viewers have limited seat availability.
The downside case is front-loading. Nolan has a passionate fan base that may have rushed into theaters immediately, and a long running time limits the number of daily showings. Spider-Man will also take a meaningful portion of premium screens on July 31. If the second weekend falls sharply or international totals update slowly, the published worldwide number could remain just below the target at the cutoff even if it crosses shortly afterward.
This prediction uses the best widely reported worldwide cumulative total available through the end of July 31. Later revisions will not change the original result unless the reporting service explicitly corrects an accounting error. My expectation is that strong word of mouth, international appeal and continued IMAX business push The Odyssey beyond half a billion dollars before August begins.
